What are antioxidants? Antioxidants protect us from free radicals, but what does that mean?
Basically, free radicals are unstable molecules running around your body wrecking havoc by stealing electrons from stable molecules. This damages cells, and also creates more unstable molecules to run around causing more damage to healthy cells. It’s a bit of a domino effect.
Where do these free radicals come from? They come from many forms, from the foods we eat, air pollution, alcohol, cigarette smoke, medications, and even the byproducts of cell metabolism.
These free radicals cause what is known as “oxidative stress” on the cells they affect, which can lead to systemic inflammation, and cellular damage.
Systemic inflammation and oxidative stress are associated with all kinds of health issues, including heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and skin damage.
This is where antioxidants come in. Antioxidants run around giving electrons to these unstable molecules, so they are happy molecules, and no longer want to steal electrons and damage cells. This lessens the oxidative stress on the body, which in turn decreases inflammation and the health conditions associated with systemic inflammation.
So how do we get more of these antioxidants in our body? Diet and lifestyle.
We want to avoid activities that expose us to free radicals, such as deep fried foods, excessive alcohol, and smoking. We want to eat a well rounded diet, full of whole unprocessed foods, fruits, and vegetables. And as we get older, we can give ourselves a boost with supplements.
Some powerhouse foods to incorporate into your diet include:
- Green Tea
- Tart Cherry
- Red Grapes
- Dark Chocolate
- Red Cabbage
Supplements are also a great boost, especially as you get older.
Some of my favorite antioxidant supplements to include in my and my family’s daily life are:
- Milk Thistle
- Pine Bark Extract
- Alpha Lipoic Acid
For so long, I was cobbling all these supplements together in the form of a million pills a day. It was a pain, and I definitely couldn’t get my husband to commit to so many pills throughout the day.
Then I found an amazing natural supplement that had all these, plus a bunch of other great ones I had my eye on, and was planning to incorporate in the near future. doTerra’s Alpha CRS+ has all of them, except the magical astaxanthin (learn more about it here!), which they have included in their omega essential oil supplement, xEO Mega (read this article to learn all about the importance of omega essential oils, and keeping a good 3:6 omega ratio!) The Alpha CRS+ also has included extracts of some of those powerhouse foods I listed, including pomegranate extract, turmeric root extract, green tea extract, and ginger root extract.
For an extra boost, we love to include doTerra’s Turmeric dual chamber capsules in our daily regimen.
